Crop Insurance 101: Harvest Claim Tips

Report a notice of loss in a timely manner. Losses can be reported to your crop insurance agent or directly to your Approved Insurance Provider (AIP). Many AIPs now offer online or mobile logins for more convenient claim reporting and tracking.

Typical Multi-Peril Crop Insurance policies require a notice of loss within 72 hours after discovery of damage, but not later than 15 days after the end of the insurance period. Insurance ends the earliest of:

  • The destruction of a crop
  • Harvest (most likely event to start the 15-day count)
  • Final adjustment of loss
  • Applicable calendar date
  • December 10th for corn and soybeans in 2023
  • Abandonment

Revenue losses must be submitted no later than 45 days after release of harvest price if no damage or loss of production (price loss only).

Example: Harvest price released November 2nd, deadline to report a revenue loss is December 17th.
